The Future of AI Is Open and Proprietary

NVIDIA founder and CEO Jensen Huang told attendees at NVIDIA GTC that "proprietary versus open is not a thing. It's proprietary and open." He emphasized that AI innovation requires a diverse ecosystem of models working together.

AI leaders including the CEOs of Mistral, Perplexity, Cursor, Reflection AI, and Thinking Machines Lab agreed that open model efforts benefit innovation across the AI ecosystem.

NVIDIA is now the largest organization on Hugging Face with nearly 4,000 team members contributing to open source AI.

At GTC, NVIDIA announced the NVIDIA Nemotron Coalition, a first-of-its-kind global collaboration of model builders and AI labs advancing open, frontier-level foundation models.

The coalition's first project will be a base model co-developed by Mistral AI and NVIDIA, with coalition members contributing data, evaluations, and domain expertise. NVIDIA Nemotron models have been downloaded more than 45 million times from Hugging Face.

Panelists highlighted that AI agents are becoming capable coworkers. Cursor CEO Michael Truell said agents will "take on tasks that take many hours or many days."

Reflection AI cofounder Misha Laskin called models "fundamental knowledge infrastructure" that "yearns for openness." Mistral CEO Arthur Mensch stated that "open-wide models should be the basis for building all the AI software in the world."
